SAP Plans Its Own AppStore for Business ByDesign

Euro am Sonntag, September 18, 2010 (Print)

SAP is preparing its own download platform for its mid-market software suite SAP Business ByDesign. It is said to be similar to Apple’s AppStore and will be launched next year, according to an internal memo seen by Euro am Sonntag. Similar to Apple users, SAP Business ByDesign customers will have an opportunity to “extend their system” there, the memo said. Market observers expect SAP might unveil the new distribution model at its developer conference SAP TechEd in mid-October or at a conference for IT analysts in December. With the launch of such a marketplace, SAP would also support external developers in sales and marketing. In mid-August, SAP co-CEO Jim Hagemann Snabe said in an interview: “I fancy something like an AppStore for SAP Business ByDesign.” An internal SAP source confirmed that the company’s preparations in the matter were in full swing. It is imaginable that the platform will be used to sell programs for mobile end devices or more complex applications to comply with customs regulations in order processing, sources said. Sales might be shared between developers and SAP. (Original article in German)

Mobile CRM Not Just for SFA Anymore

searchcrm.techtarget.com, September 02, 2010 (Online)

Much as SaaS rose to prominence with CRM, the promise of mobile computing has centered around CRM as well, as companies sought to provide salespeople out on the road with the latest information on prospects and customers. With the emergence and ubiquity of smartphones, much of the focus and development around mobile applications from vendors has shifted to BI and providing dashboards and reports to executives on the move. In the wake of SAP’s acquisition of Sybase, SAP’s motto has become “anytime, anywhere, any device,” and early demos and promises have focused on BI. But, today, mobile enablement for sales means more than just sales force automation, particularly for SAP customers wondering what the Sybase acquisition will bring, notes Jack Gold, founder and principal analyst of J. Gold Associates. SAP already had a long-running partnership with Sybase to bring its CRM application to the iPhone and BlackBerry, but with the acquisition, there is the expectation that SAP will mobile-enable other modules from its ERP applications to benefit sales. “They’ve tried to take some common denominator apps — order placement, time and travel, dispatch – those are on the list for mobilization first,” Gold said. “Then they’ll move on to more niche-y apps or customized apps.”

CRM: What to Consider When Choosing a System

networkworld.com, September 01, 2010 (Online)

Old CRM software installed ten years ago is showing its age just as the market for CRM software has fully matured. There are choices now between on-premise and SaaS applications. According to Mark Ameres, a CRM consultant, many companies are running “dead-end” applications that either integrate poorly with other enterprise systems or can no longer accommodate corporate growth. Online CRM costs less to deploy than an on-premise system, and it may be more easily funded because it can be budgeted as an operational-as opposed to a capital-expense, says Sajid Usman, an analyst and consultant with Accenture’s CRM practice. Integration concerns were critical for Maricel Cabahug, CIO with Yaskawa America, which manufactures components for industrial equipment. She chose on-premise CRM from SAP because it could be linked more easily to the company’s SAP ERP system. Yaskawa America lost business when sales agents did not realize they were pursuing an existing customer as a prospect. “Someone can know that a customer has a machine being serviced and see that we are negotiating a new contract with that same customer,” says Cabahug.

SAAS Increasingly Popular among Small Businesses, Survey Finds

eWeek, August 30, 2010 (Online)

Companies that provide a convergence of on-premises and SaaS are clearing concerns for interested SMBs trying to maximize cloud and on-premises issues. According to AMI’s latest worldwide SMB Cloud Services Practice, there are roughly 750,000 small businesses and 20,000 medium-size businesses already using SaaS. In addition, the survey found by looking at today’s SaaS users, 78% of small businesses and 31% of midsize businesses are leveraging a SaaS plus on-premises mix, while approximately only a third of SaaS users are using an actual pure-SaaS product. With an anticipated growth of up to $95 billion (€75.19 billion) in global SMB cloud-related spending by 2014, the firm said it isn’t a surprise to see over half of US SMBs looking into SaaS as a potential solution. “Though cloud computing is seen as the next IT platform, the consideration of SaaS amongst SMBs as the next favorable cost-saving model is expedited by the macro situation we are in today,” said AMI Senior Associate Yedda Chew.
