SAP Rolls Out Wave of ‘Rapid Deployment’ Apps

pcworld.com, September 22, 2010 (Online)

SAP is unleashing a set of “Rapid Deployment” software applications that can be rolled out in as little as 12 weeks, the company announced Wednesday. The products include a combination of software, services and content at a predefined cost, and can be run on-premise or hosted by SAP or its partners. The initial wave of Rapid Deployment applications includes modules for CRM, SRM and BCM. They are meant to support a particular business process, not replace an entire system. More Rapid Deployment offerings will be released over the next year in areas such as mobility, supply chain and manufacturing, SAP said. “Rapid Deployment solutions offer pre-configured solutions where the services are built specifically for these solutions, and include tools to help customers achieve rapid value from their investment,” said SAP spokesman Saswato Das. “On the other hand, Best Run Now packages are packages composed from SAP software applications, focusing on solving a specific customer pain or business issue paired with corresponding service offerings.” [Also seen in: San Francisco Chronicle, CIO, InfoWorld, networkworld.com (USA)]

SAP Plans Its Own AppStore for Business ByDesign

Euro am Sonntag, September 18, 2010 (Print)

SAP is preparing its own download platform for its mid-market software suite SAP Business ByDesign. It is said to be similar to Apple’s AppStore and will be launched next year, according to an internal memo seen by Euro am Sonntag. Similar to Apple users, SAP Business ByDesign customers will have an opportunity to “extend their system” there, the memo said. Market observers expect SAP might unveil the new distribution model at its developer conference SAP TechEd in mid-October or at a conference for IT analysts in December. With the launch of such a marketplace, SAP would also support external developers in sales and marketing. In mid-August, SAP co-CEO Jim Hagemann Snabe said in an interview: “I fancy something like an AppStore for SAP Business ByDesign.” An internal SAP source confirmed that the company’s preparations in the matter were in full swing. It is imaginable that the platform will be used to sell programs for mobile end devices or more complex applications to comply with customs regulations in order processing, sources said. Sales might be shared between developers and SAP. (Original article in German)

“We See Mobile Devices as the Access Point for Data and Lots of Applications”

Hindustan Times, September 07, 2010 (Print)

SAP, which provides business software and applications, is betting big on the increasing penetration of mobility devices. In an interview in Hindustan Times, Peter Gartenberg, Managing Director for SAP Indian Subcontinent, argues that providing business applications on a mobile handset helps unlock lots of value. As penetration of mobility devices is increasing by the day, Gartenberg is asked how SAP is altering its business model. He states that the first part of SAP’s strategy involved the acquisition of Sybase, helping the company offer many of its applications such as HR Processes, Procurement Processes, Analytic Processes, and Customer Relationship Management on mobile devices. Confirming that SAP sees mobile devices as a key revenue driver, Gartenberg emphasizes their role as a ubiquitous access point for data and lots of applications. “Particularly across Asia, you see a lot of leapfrogging as people can now bypass the desktop era for data access,” he says, adding: “a lot of value gets unlocked in an application when we make it available on a device such as mobile handsets.” Globally SAP’s target is to go after one billion mobility users.

Mobile CRM Not Just for SFA Anymore

searchcrm.techtarget.com, September 02, 2010 (Online)

Much as SaaS rose to prominence with CRM, the promise of mobile computing has centered around CRM as well, as companies sought to provide salespeople out on the road with the latest information on prospects and customers. With the emergence and ubiquity of smartphones, much of the focus and development around mobile applications from vendors has shifted to BI and providing dashboards and reports to executives on the move. In the wake of SAP’s acquisition of Sybase, SAP’s motto has become “anytime, anywhere, any device,” and early demos and promises have focused on BI. But, today, mobile enablement for sales means more than just sales force automation, particularly for SAP customers wondering what the Sybase acquisition will bring, notes Jack Gold, founder and principal analyst of J. Gold Associates. SAP already had a long-running partnership with Sybase to bring its CRM application to the iPhone and BlackBerry, but with the acquisition, there is the expectation that SAP will mobile-enable other modules from its ERP applications to benefit sales. “They’ve tried to take some common denominator apps — order placement, time and travel, dispatch – those are on the list for mobilization first,” Gold said. “Then they’ll move on to more niche-y apps or customized apps.”
